Chapter Ten

Nothing except for the war.

Inara was reminded of this fact the moment she woke and found that her husband had left already. This was common, though it still left an ache in her heart. After the evening they shared, she had hoped that she would be able to wake in his arms or at least to his gaze.

She pushed herself up from the bed and scolded herself for being so sentimental. It wasn't like she was a newly wed disappointed by married life. She knew what she was getting into and things had been exceptionally good for her thus far. She shouldn't be greedy and ask for more.

"So, how was kissing?" asked her handmaiden when they came in to help her dress.

She was really wrong in thinking that Kiri was the practical no-nonsense one. She had merely been keeping all that lewdness contained and now that it was clear Inara didn't mind when they spoke their mind, she unleashed all of that inappropriateness without mercy.

She thought of how Janette looked like she was going to tease her already and her mischievousness raised its head. "It's nice. But unexpectedly messy," she said in mock thoughtfulness.

"Messy?" asked Janette who, to her knowledge, had never even taken a lover before and learned all of those terrible things that she was so good at through books and gossip.

"I mean, we're moving our tongue a lot and at first I wasn't sure what to do with my lips. Should I open it wider or keep it mostly closed? There's some sort of optimal openness to it, evidently. And then there's so much saliva suddenly but we're also trying to breathe, but Javierage is really good at it. I would have suspected that he had done it before but he is always so intense and it didn't matter what he did. He's always so purposeful about it that it doesn't matter if he has actually done something before."

Janette was red by the end of her blabbering and she couldn't help but smile a little at the small victory. "I didn't know kisses could be that complicated," Janette said.

She grinned. "I think with practice, I'll be much better at it," she said. Curiosity got the better of her and she asked before she could stop herself, "are any of you seeing anyone romantically?"

All three of her handmaidens were so steadfast in their denial that there was no reason so suspect they were dating, though she couldn't understand why.

"Most of our men are fighting down below," Janette said.

She hadn't thought much about it, but now that she pointed it out, she realized she hadn't came across that many men in all the months here. She was so used to seclusion that she had somehow managed to miss something so big. It was embarrassing.

"That's not to say that women aren't allowed to fight!" Janette continue, misunderstanding her silence. "Or that only good men join the fight. There are those who chose to remain to make sure that everything is running smoothly here," she hastily explained.
